About Korfball
What is korfball?
Korfball is a fast-paced, mixed-gender team sport with similarities to netball and basketball. Teams of 8 (4 male, 4 female) throw a ball through a 3.5-meter high basket. It emphasizes teamwork, with no dribbling allowed and unique rules that ensure gender equality.
How many players are in a korfball team?
A korfball team has 8 players on court: exactly 4 male and 4 female players. This creates true gender equality, with each player having equal impact on the game. Both genders participate equally throughout the match.
What are the basic korfball rules?
Key rules:
- No dribbling: Only passing allowed - emphasizes teamwork over individual skill
- Gender-specific defending: Men only defend men, women only defend women
- Basket placement: Each team has a basket at both ends of the court
- Possession switching: Teams switch sides halfway through the game
- Scoring: Each basket through the hoop scores 1 point
For comprehensive rules, visit our What is Korfball page.
Why is korfball a great mixed-gender sport?
Korfball is unique because it was designed for genuine gender equality from the start (invented 1902). Key features:
- Equal numbers of males and females on court
- Players only defend their own gender - no unfair strength/size advantages
- No dribbling emphasizes skill over physical attributes
- Rules designed for partnership, not competition between genders
- Men and women have equal opportunities to score and play
How is korfball different from basketball and netball?
vs Basketball: Korfball has no dribbling (only passing), is mixed-gender with 8v8, and emphasizes teamwork over individual athleticism.
vs Netball: Korfball is mixed-gender (netball is typically single-gender), allows more flexible movement, and has baskets at both ends of court.
All three are great sports, but korfball stands out for true gender equality!
